Start with the state. The Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC) requires a Home Improvement Registration for work on an existing house valued over $7,500 and up to $75,000, and a residential license beyond $75,000; you can search a company on the board's website. Next, the permit: inside Alexandria city limits, permits come from the city's Construction Development Department on Murray Street, and elsewhere your town hall or Rapides Parish can tell you which office covers your address. Then the paperwork: insist on a contract with a drawing of each pier or support, the system being used, and written warranty terms, including whether coverage passes to the next owner. If the job is big or two bids tell different stories, an independent Louisiana-licensed engineer is worth the fee.
